The only way in
Personal information reaches us through one door: the contact form, which carries the name you give, the email you'd like a reply at, and your message. That is the complete list of what we ever ask for.
Reader counts
A measurement tool may be running that counts page reads by rough region and device type, in totals. It does not identify people and we don't try to; a site about moss has no use for a profile of you.
What we do with it
Reply to your message; see which notes are read so the next ones are better; keep the site running and secure. Nothing is sold or shared for marketing by us. The advertising set out below is Google's, and it works differently, which is why it gets its own section.
Logs behind the glass
There is one record we never see the inside of: the hosting company's access logs, which note the IP address behind each request, the browser it declared, the page fetched and the moment it happened. They serve security and error tracing, the host decides their lifespan, and no attempt is made here to tie them to a person.
Cookies
The measurement tool, when on, may set its own, and the advertising described next sets more. Refuse or delete them in your browser and every page works identically.
Advertising under the glass
Google serves the ads that appear on these pages. Google and its partners may use cookies or similar identifiers to pick which ad to show and to count whether it was shown, and in some regions the choice takes account of sites you have visited before.
You can change that. Personalised advertising is switchable in Google's ad settings, and cookies can be refused for this site in any browser. The terrarium notes are unaffected either way.
Two services in the background
FormSubmit delivers the messages; the measurement provider, when active, counts the reads. Each runs under its own privacy policy and receives only what its job needs.
Retention
Messages are kept until answered and for up to a year afterwards in case you write back; count totals for whatever the provider's standard period is.
